The Wise One’s Costume and Headdress

The Wise One’s Costume went though many changes before we came up with something distinguished but simple for him to wear.

His costume had to have many things in common with the Small One and some of the other characters, but still have a rich trimming that set it aside from the rest.

The Belt and Energy Pendant were not worn in the final design, this was due to the fact that the design of The Wise One Changed considerably and his now beard covered the pendant, the belt simply spoiled the flow of the outfit and we decided not to use it.

This Energy Pendant was not worn as it was obscured by The Wise One’s beard, although the centre emblem design was employed by The Small One who wore a much more detailed and decorative pendant.

The Wise One’s Headdress.

The Wise One’s Headdress was designed to be practical, the sun neck protector borrowed the principle from the Foreign Legionnaire’s hats, the top part was very Japanese in design, both elements were combined with the weaved golden texture and colour to give him a regal and powerful stature but still very practical.

The Small One’s Costume

Again a simple but practical design.

Story wise... the Small One has an important secret to hide about his appearance and we needed something that covered him completely, but allowed him without facial features to still portray some emotion. This design will be very useful for part two... ‘The Journey’, when he reveals his secret and the aspect for the costume will make even more sense.

Practicality wise... The Small One was a puppet and all the pulleys, rods and arms up his back again needed to be hidden, so this design was in all ways useful.

The face covering cloth was something we searched for, for a long time. We wanted something black that had a wavy texture, it also at times had to appear to be very transparent so that light could be emitted and also, if he cried you had no problems excepting that tear drops could ooze out.

The Ring Of Warning

Carved from the bone of a Seer and coated in Hawkites teardrops, this structure holds the legendary Red Warning Stone of Marimdorph.

In reality the ring was made out of Millyput and painted Gold. The stone was a red diode that was able to glow when a current was connected to the wires protruding out of it, the current was varied using a transformer from a train set. The only problem making the diode burn so brightly was, they would burn out very quickly and we went though a lot. On one occasion (the night tree shoot) we ran out of them and had to halt filming until someone ran to Tandy to buy more.
The stone of the ring was also emphasised using a particle emulator effect that tracked the movement a frame at a time.
